| August | 'The
Astronomical Debt', by Philippe Collier, in Connectis 8/2001, cover theme:
Telecommunications. The Debt Threat The report quotes EURESCOM's director Dr. Claudio Carrelli: 'Deteriorating economic conditions could force telcos to freeze spending on research and development ... Dr Claudio Carrelli, head of Eurescom, a European research centre based in Germany, sees this as an alarming trend: "The future prosperity of telecoms operators depends heavily on their capacity to innovate and introduce profitable new services. All the major players in this sector seem to have frozen their R&D budgets over the last few years, and this inertia will inevitably have a negative payback." According to Dr Carrelli, the difficulties experienced in setting up and selling new UMTS services can be explained by insufficient initiative in innovation, which contributes to falling share prices. He also notes the eternal conflict between short-term profitability and long-term investment on innovation. "Cuts in R&D might produce a momentary increase in profits, but only by jeopardising long-term profitability," he warns.' See complete article |

| May 2001 | NET 5/2001
(German magazine for communications management), editorial by Frank Backasch
(editor-in-chief): "Good times, bad times" "[...] The arising bad times increasingly raise the question, whether the companies are cutting costs at the wrong end if they decrease their proportionate expenditures for research and development. EURESCOM's director Claudio Carrelli has publicly expressed this worry ... "Not enough research threatens the share value of the telecom companies," reads his short formula of the worries from the senior level of the European network operators' reseach institute, which will also be the theme of a conference on occasion of the 10th anniversary of EURESCOM on 16 and 17 May in Heidelberg. [...] However, the relationship between innovation and share value is still complicated, as the example of Bell Labs teaches us ... Much research and innovation - Carrelli also knows - are not yet a guarantee for rising shares ..." |
| 17 May 2001 | Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung
(German regional newspaper), article by Peter Wiest: "Virtual success story. EURESCOM yesterday celebrated its 10th anniversary" "Ten years are a short time," said Claudio Carrelli,"but in the area of telecommunications you have to multiply everything by three." In this case EURESCOM would have become 30 years old yesterday - but even the 10th anniversary was a reason to celebrate for the institute at Schloss-Wolfsbrunnenweg that in its way is still unique. [...] "Actually, we are a virtual company that performs research without own laboratories" said director Claudio Carrelli. Yesterday, however, what was taking place at Schloss-Wolfsbrunnenweg was everything else than virtual: In the garden of the EURESCOM villa there was a tent built up, in which there was a lively party going on in the evening. Before that there was a reception with representatives from the shareholders and other VIPs. On this occasion the young institute and its achievements were recognised. 'EURESCOM is an equally important and successful institution,' said vice mayor Raban von der Malsburg. [...] The chairman of the Board of Governors, Joachim Claus, expressed his pride that EURESCOM is developing high-quality technologies and also contributes to the shareholders communicating about these technologies. [...]" |
